Jon Stewart for Duke Commencement Speaker 2005

We feel that Jon Stewart, host of the Daily Show, should be invited to speak at the 2005 Duke University Commencement. Jon Stewart was among those nominated by the students last fall; however, we have recently received news from the University Commencement Committee that he has not been invited. It is our hope that with sufficient popular adulation, there is still time to bring him to Duke. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, one of the most popular shows among college-age viewers, won a Peabody award for its coverage of the 2000 Presidential Election. A mix of satire and substance allows Jon Stewart to reach the college-age voter in a way no other media figures can match. In a news cycle plagued by bias and the jack-hammer thud of talking points, the Daily Show is beholden to no master but humor. It provides perspective on the lies and political maneuverings of both parties, using a satirical tone to inspire young voters to explore the truth of political issues for themselves. A recent poll conducted by University of Pennsylvania supports our belief that the Daily Show is not mere entertainment: viewing the Daily Show correlates more strongly to basic political knowledge than watching or reading the national news media. Presidential candidate John Kerry considered the Daily Show and Jon Stewart important enough to warrant a visit, as have Sen. John McCain and many other political figures from both sides of the aisle. Jon Stewart's political savvy and connection with young voters makes him a perfect choice to speak at Duke's 2005 Commencement.
