We believe that the refereeing decisions of Mr. Urs Meier cost England a place in the Semi Finals of the European Championships 2004. His place as one of Europe's top referees is highly dubious considering his performance in this game. He made many decisions that unfairly disadvantaged England, most prominently the goal he disallowed in the 90th minute. After disallowing the goal it took him a full 20 seconds to blow the whistle to signal that this was his intention. Following this play restarted, not from where the alleged offence occurred but from the other end of the pitch, where Portugal had since taken the ball. Had that goal been allowed to stand, then England would most likely have won the game.

Sky Sports match report ends with the words "England fans will feel that referee Meier is more responsible for their exit than an injury to Rooney, or misses from Beckham and Vassell.

Few will argue that they have a very good point."
