1. On November 15th the Johnson County Commissioners decided to move the age of volunteerism up to age 18 and over.
2. The K-9 Service Club of Franklin Community High School, consisting of sixty students, only four will be able to participate because of this decision; despite the fact that they and their parents and or guardians have signed the Franklin Community School Corporation's waiver and release, the Johnson County's release of liability, and the Franklin Community High School's permission slip.
3. Hundreds of students at this time are volunteering throughout Johnson County's animal service clubs. These clubs in the past year have raised more than $10.000 for the Johnson County Animal Shelter. Along with collecting; cleaning supplies, collars, leashes, food, and grooming supplies. They also have hosted adoption drives, microchip drives, and spay and neuter drives in order to keep the stray population down.
We request that:
That the Johnson County Commissioners reconsider their decision to raise the volunteer age, and further consider lowering the approved age to 14 with signed parental consent, 11-13 with adult supervision and singed parental consent.

Isn't it sad when kids are doing something so positive and people try to make it impossible for them. This is such a great thing for the kids and dogs, please do not make the road hard for them!!!

It is outrageous for Johnson County to deny these kids the opportunity to do something worthwhile that also builds their character, not to mention the tremendous need for volunteers in this area. For once, let's see a local government do what is right!!

Why is this an issue? Underage volunteers are required to have a legal guardian sign a waiver stating that they accept all responsibility for their childens injuries. This is ridiculous.

I feel that as long as the students' parents are willing to allow their kids to volunteer at the shelter, what difference does it make what age the volunteers are? I'd think the county commissioners had better plan on spending plenty of hours volunteering
