● With soaring rental costs and low property vacancies in Australia's capital cities, students living away from home are facing a dire situation.
● At any given time, hundreds of students are relying on the goodwill of friends as they move from house to house sleeping on sofas.
● The earnings limits that Centrelink has set before benefits are affected is inadequate and unrealistic. Students are forced to work unreasonable hours in cash in hand jobs- this is detrimental to their studies
Georgia's Platform
● That Centrelink raise the current Youth Allowance Benefit in line with the housing crisis and inflation.
● That in response to the serious lack of affordable student housing, universities work with students in sanctioning student run co-operatives.
● That universities provide facilities/spaces for initiatives such as breakfasts, dinners and soup kitchens to be implemented so as to alleviate some of the stresses that students are facing.
