Your Excellency,
Sub: Memorandum on the subject of violent attacks on the Indian student community in Australia
We, Telugu Association of London (TAL), are extremely concerned about the recent violent attacks taken place on Indian student community in Australia. Among Indian student community there is also large number of Telugu student populations studying in Australia. One of the critically wounded students Mr Sravan Kumar Theerthala is studying in Melbourne is from the state of Andhra Pradesh. We understand that there was a protest march on 31st May in Melbourne was an expression of insecurity they are facing in Australia.
The news media in Andhra Pradesh (Telugu speaking province in India) is reporting frightening stories about the attacks. There are no positive reports about the security agencies or the Government departments actions to prevent such attacks. Understandably this fuels the fear among the parents, friends and relatives living in India or other countries.
In our knowledge this is the first time foreign student community is being targeted by racist or criminal elements living in a civilised society. It is beyond our imagination how this kind of attacks is growing in a country like Australia. In addition to this, there is a possibility that these types of attacks can be spread on other Indian community professionals who made Australia as their home country.
Australia is one of the popular destinations for Indian students and professionals. Indians are peace loving community and we believe that they are contributing substantially to your country. We wish that this should be continued for the mutual benefit.
We intend to extend our solidarity to Indian community living in Australia. On behalf our UK Telugu Community, we request your Government to take preventive measures against such attacks and provide the needed security.
Please forward our memorandum to your Prime Ministers office in Australia.
Yours sincerely,
President
Telugu Association of London (TAL)
