To The Editors, New York Magazine,
RE: "Best Doctors" Annual Issue and the specialty of Emergency Medicine
We write to suggest that you would serve your readers well in future years by including the specialty of Emergency Medicine in your annual listing of the Best Doctors in New York ("the finest physicians . . . in every field and specialty"). Your listings should include Emergency Departments and/or Emergency Physicians.
Our specialty, Emergency Medicine, has been recognized as one of the core medical specialties by the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for more than two decades. Emergency Medicine came of age in the 1960s and 1970s, as house calls became less common, and as doctors making house calls simply couldnt deliver the latest life-saving technology.
Emergency Physicians specialize in diagnosing and treating the first hours of illness: the whole spectrum from heart attacks and strokes through to broken toes. More than 100 million visits to Emergency Departments are made annually in the United States. New Yorkers are more likely to see an Emergency Physician in a given year than they are to see a Hematologist, Infectious Disease specialist or Hand Surgeon. In the wake of the TV series ER our specialty also has enormous public recognition.
High time to include it in your otherwise excellent yearly review!
