NJ Developmentally Disabled Residential Initiative and Self-determination

For the third year in a row the Division of Developmental Disabilities has not had a residential initiative. Without an initiative the only process for placing individuals upon the death or serious illness of a parent(s) is an Emergency Placement. Emergency Placements force placement in either an Institution or Group Home anywhere in the state (away from family and the community) with little or no choice and are not an appropriate residential planning policy.
In addition, the Division of Developmental Disabilities eliminated the Self-Determination program that provided residential supports for participants to live in the community where they wanted to live and with the appropriate cost effective, person created and centered supports. In its place the Division of Developmental Disabilities created Real Life Choices which is extended family support and does not address the long term residential and support issues of what to do when parents become seriously ill or die.
This lack of long term residential planning and choice for people with Developmental Disabilities who have aging parents is unacceptable. By signing the petition below you agree that the NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities should reinstate residential initiatives and return Self-Determination as an option for residential planning.
