No Sex Offender Facility in Montville

On April 13, 2010 the Connecticut Department of Correction announced that a 12-bed sexual offender facility could be located in Montville, next to the Corrigan-Radgowski Prison on Route 32. This sex offender center will be located within our main commercial corridor and residential areas. The location is within a mile radius of multiple residential neighborhoods, three daycare centers, and a large majority of commercial businesses. This program will directly impact the quality of life in Montville.

We ask that Governor Jodi Rell, all State Officials, the Department of Corrections, and the Department of Justice choose a more suitable site for the sex offender facility. This site should be located in an area that would not be in the center of social and economic activity of the host municipality.

FACTS:

1. The facility would be reserved for high-risk sex offenders who have finished serving long prison sentences. (New Haven Representative Mike Lawlor, 1/07/2010)

2. Every study has shown that serious violent offenders are most likely to re-offend during the first few months following their release from prison

3. These sexual offenders are from other towns in Connecticut who do not want them. Therefore, the Department of Corrections has decided that Montville will be the dumping ground for the serious, violent offenders.

We the undersigned are opposed to the location of a treatment facility, which will house pre-release violent, high-risk sex offenders at the Corrigan-Radgowski Prison in Montville, Connecticut.
