Opposing Of Disney Renaming "Rapunzel" To "Tangled"

Disney Feature Animation has been working on the creation of a movie adaptation of the classic fairytale "Rapunzel" for over a decade. The movie has gone through many changes and versions but eventually a definitive release date was set for early december 2010. All through the years this project has been described in press releases as Disney 50th classic animated fairytale with the latest Disney princess to follow in the line of classic characters like "Snow White", "Cinderella", "Sleeping Beauty" and "The Little Mermaid", to name just a few.

Last year Disney released the movie "The Princess and the Frog", which saw the adition of Disney first african american heroine and princess Tiana. The movie was also a return to handdrawn animation. The movie received glowing reviews yet didn't meet Disney's expectations in regards to box office results. At least, that's what rumors tell us. This unfortunately set a process in motion that has led to an awfull decision being made about the movie "Rapunzel".

According to persistant rumors online marketing people at Disney figured that the reason why "Princess and the Frog" failed to meet their box office expectations was because there was too much focus on the princess aspect and that the movie would not appeal enough to boys. A large and important demographic. Panic spread around the studio and several projects in devellopment were stopped and projects currently in devellopment were closely examined. And now the shocking and sad reason for this petition.

Disney changed the title of it's 50th classic animated fairytale from "Rapunzel" to "Tangled".

There are numerous reports online that people were asking in survey's online to vote for possible new titles for the movie very recently. The movie was advertised and talked about in press release as recently as january as "Rapunzel". So why change the iconic, recognizable title "Rapunzel" to the generic, unimaginative "Tangled". To appeal to a larger demographic perhaps? Because there was fear that yet another Disney princess story would make the movie underperform at the box office? If we examine a recent post on Disney animation's official facebook by the movie's producer Roy Conli it seems like they are trying to even sidetrack Rapunzel's character and put more focus on the male lead. The statement reads:

"In our film, the infamous bandit Flynn Rider meets his match in the girl with the 70 feet of magical golden hair. We're having a lot of fun pairing Flynn, who's seen it all, with Rapunzel, who's been locked away in a tower for 18 years."

The male lead "the infamous Flynn Rider" ( Who? ), is mentioned twice and it's not untill the second sentence when the name Rapunzel is mentioned. The new synopsis puts focus on the male lead and downgrades Rapunzel, the center of the story to the b-character. It seems like the rumors are true and Disney's marketing department is working frantically to try and give this project an image make-over.

The funny thing is that the overall reaction to this title on the internet so far is lukewarm, and that is putting it mildly. Disney fans generally seem to hate the new title, the general public wonders why they did not stick to the recognizability of the fairytale character and wonder who will remember a title like that (especially after having grown acustomed to the title "Rapunzel" over the past 10 years).

Personally I'll oppose this title in every single way. How could this title ever qualify as a Disney Classic and rank besides previous fairytale classics. It's a disgrace to the Disney legacy of telling classic fairytale policies and another sign of Hollywood caving in to box office demands and marketing strategies, completely overruling storytelling and creativity. It's a sign of what poisons the art of movie making which is why I urge you to sign this petition in the hopes that Disney changes the title back to "Rapunzel", the title this project deserves.

I'm deeply sadened and very upset over this devellopment and hope this decision will be turned around in time. If not, then I'll keep fighting this title, make my own versions of teasers, trailers, book and dvd covers with the rightfull title to this project which is none other then "Rapunzel".

Please help me in setting things right and change the title back! It's the only right thing to do.

550. Amanda C | Please don't change the title and storyline of this movie. If I wanted to see some sassy updated version of fairytales, I'd go see Shrek, not a Disney movie.
