Organ Donors Rights to Autonomy

Petition on the rights of persons wishing to be organ donors

We the undersigned are deeply concerned that families have the final say as to whether a person becomes an organ donor irrespective of what that persons prior expressed wish was.

Recent legislation has also added the further complication of widening the criteria as to who is family.

We believe in autonomy. The right of that person to decide what happens to their body after their death if an expressed wish was stated prior to that time. We do not believe that any family member, distant relative or others have the right to veto a persons wish to become an organ donor.

We ask that the Parliamentary Health Select Committee in their forthcoming Review of the Human Tissue Act 1964 that they strongly recommend a change in the law that provides that individuals rights are upheld over the wishes of others.

1000. Alan Andsherylp | Alan is a recipient of a donated organ and now enjoys a healthy life thanks to the generosity of a donor family. The decision of an invidivual to donate an organ is very personal and must be respected and their wishes followed.

978. Desiree W | Our rights as autonomous human beings must be respected. A decision to become a donor is not one taken lightly and is concidered thoughtfully respective of what we find acceptable for our own body. This does not change when we die. We still own it, no one
