The horrific treatment of Brett Favre, the greatest franchise player in the history of the NFL, is deplorable. General Manager Ted Thompson has not only shown no regard for the fans of the Green Bay Packers, but a steady lack of regard for the Packers' greatest player.
Brett's history and dedication for 17 seasons has earned him the right to rejoin the team he helped make a household name, delivered to Super Bowls and loved for almost two decades. Favre recently asked Thompson to discuss returning to the Packers with him, and was answered by a text message saying that he was on vacation.
How can one fathomably treat the single greatest player of your franchise with such disdain and disregard? How can the fans who Favre has played for year after year, stand by and allow a CEO of a company to dictate the fate of a team we love?
Favre has earned his right to return to the Peackers, NOT as a backup for nonvetted Rodgers, where Thompson is looking to place him. Brett's desire to return is one that fans sportswide have awaited. His retirement, seemingly more and more forced, was the most lamented event in recent sports history. As a dedicated Packers fan, I often stated that if Favre decided to return, I would be elated. I often wished for that very thing.
If he desires to go to another team, it is only because the Packers have suddenly and without cause, decided to turn their backs on the greatest player of their franchise. An unimaginable thing. I will follow Favre wherever he goes, and I will boycott the Packers for this blatant disregard to not only the most beloved player of the game, but the player single-handedly responsible for taking that franchise to greatness.
Whether you are a Packers fan, or not, does not matter. The disregard for one of football's greatest heroes is what's at stake. As fans who have received nothing but laughs, cheers, elation, dedication and shared heartaches from this team, we deserve to have our voices heard.
Football isn't about turning your backs on the greatest players of the game or the fans that have faithfully supported franchises. Tell the Packers and their brass that if Favre is continued to be pushed to the wayside, you will no longer support them as a franchise. Make your voices heard and take back the greatest game to ever be played.
