Hon'ble Justice R Mishra Commission
We urge the Commission to reject any proposal to extend privileges provided under the Constitution for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to any non-Hindu group.
The demands by Christian groups for special privileges to the so-called 'Christian dalits' are intended to promote conversions to Christianity. The Supreme Court in a landmark judgment of 1977 (Chief Justice AN Ray) had noted that, "if a person purposely undertakes the conversion of another to his religion, that would impinge on the freedom of conscience guaranteed to all citizens of the country alike".
Extension of the privileges guaranteed under the Constitution to a Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to such converts will tantamount to provision of incentives for conversions which is patently an unconstitutional activity. Such an opening up of the floodgates of conversions will destroy the social fabric of the nation, and will result in the division of the nation on communal lines.
The category of 'Dalit' is a political invention and has no sanction in Indian tradition. 'Dalit' theology is being promoted by Christian evangelical and proselytizing groups to promote the 'spreading of the Gospel' which is an euphemism for achieving conversions by any means.
We would like to point out that the purpose of the missionary demand is to grab political power at different levels of the polity, by appropriating the SC/ST platform and all its attendant Constitutional and legal benefits.
In the name of national unity and integration, we request the Hon'ble Commission to reject any moves to provide for special privileges to converts to Christianity.
