We, the undersigned residents of Travis County and the Texas Hill Country, would prefer that Hammetts Crossing be left exactly as it is, with the scenic, sturdy bridge that was built by local folks in 1924 as the only bridge crossing the Pedernales River there. We understand that, in its most recent safety inspection, the bridge received a rating of 64, which is 14 points above the 50 rating that would have designated it as unsafe. Given that, the safety argument for its replacement is not justified. If the addition of side railings is required to make the bridge more safe, we would be open to the discussion of that modification, if it could be done without obscuring the beautiful views of the river that the bridge currently affords.
