For years, the Hercules Music Department has been hailed as one of the best (if not, the best) music program in the district, nay, county. The orchestra and choir director, Sharon Calonico, is facing a possible layoff. The band director, Mark Nemoyten, is definitely being laid off. If the two are laid off, the West Contra Costa Unified School District (hereby referred to as WCCUSD) will replace them with someone less qualified. What's the sense in that? If they're going to be replaced, and the program isn't being eliminated, why not let them keep their jobs? I may not know enough about the behind-the-scenes politics in the WCCUSD or for that matter, the California State Government to make sense of the situation, but what I do know is that this is unnecessary. Please, music students, parents, former students, and future students, don't let this injustice happen, let them have their jobs. The elementary programs have been eliminated, don't let the Hercules Middle/High program fail due to the firing of two great teachers and musicians.
