Cliffe and associated surrounding areas are a landscape which is rich in unique and valuable history and archaeology from the Palaeolithic period to present day. It is of concern to residents and to students of history that this is now under threat from systematic uncontrolled metal detecting leading to valuable historical evidence being destroyed or lost in pursuit of profit. We implore local Farmers and Landholders to withdraw all permissions for metal detecting activities on their lands for other than fully accredited and licensed operations supporting official archaeological research.
