Federal Electoral Boundary Commission – Petition
The redistribution of federal electoral districts provides the geographic areas where voters cast votes to elect Members of Parliament. This process occurs at 10-year intervals based on the latest census population numbers. Federal Electoral Boundary Commissions (FEBC) in each province consider and assess demographic changes that have occurred since the previous redistribution process. Based on their assessment, the Commissions make recommendations for alterations in existing boundaries in order to achieve better representation of persons and communities in Parliament.
Although the Pemberton Valley, and the Village of Pemberton, has been well represented by the former and current Members of Parliament from Chilliwack-Fraser Valley since 2004, there is a disconnect as this part of the constituency is far more aligned with West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country from a geographic, economic and day to day social perspective. The 2012 proposed redistribution establishes that the Pemberton Valley remain in the Chilliwack-Fraser Valley constituency and also sees the addition of 100 Mile House into the constituency, a community that is over 275 Kilometers away from Pemberton.
The Village of Pemberton is calling on residents in the Pemberton Valley to express their concern with the redistribution proposal by signing the petition below and attending the upcoming public meeting on September 11, 2012.
A series of public hearings have been scheduled for across the province in September and October; on September 11th a public hearing will be held in Squamish at the Executive Suites Garibaldi Springs Resort at 7 p.m. Those wishing to speak at the hearing must apply before Thursday, August 30, 2012.
