Chief Executive Officer of Total
As you know, the governing authorities of Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) are engaged in a brutal crackdown of those who are questioning the legitimacy of the June 12, 2009 Iranian presidential election. The order of this crackdown comes directly from Supreme Leader of IRI, Ayatollah Ali Khamanei. His order ignores the basic right of Iranians for peaceful assembly and expression, which is stated in Human Rights declaration also agreed by French government. As we have all witnessed, this crackdown has not brought resolution to the problem, but rather an encyclopedia of heartbreak for the Iranian people, so many of whom have been injured or killed for simply daring to have a public voice.
We, the undersigned, recognize Total as one of the major business partners with the IRI and strongly believe that any type of business relationship that Total has with the IRI ought to respect basic human freedoms. We believe that both Totals business ventures and exchange of technology with the IRI serve to strengthen the ruling Iranian government, and by extension the governments repressive power over the Iranian people. Therefore, we, the undersigned, request that Total cease business ventures and technology exchange with the government of Iran in order to support citizenry of Iran calling for their basic rights.
We hope for a positive reaction from Total to our request. We believe such a response will be reflective of Totals commitment to doing business with governments who respect the human rights and lawful voices of their citizens.
