To whom it may concern at the CARTOON NETWORK:
We, the undersigned, represent some of the many fans of Warner Brothers classic animation, particularly of the character Speedy Gonzales, the fastest mouse in all Mexico. We are dismayed by your statements to FOX NEWS(http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,48872,00.html) that Speedy Gonzales is deemed offensive by your channel. Speedy Gonzales has remained a very popular character since his creation in 1952, even winning an Academy Award and nominated for two others. Speedy Gonzales is a heroic, actually positive Mexican image. His costars are at times stereotyped, but it is important to note that the complete series ran on Nickelodeon Cable Network and the WB channel for years without controversy. It is also important to note that these stereotypes are not prevalent in the entire series. Roughly 40 of these were created, and many, like the Daffy Duck/Speedy Gonzales pairings and several Sylvester/Speedy films, feature no other Mexican characters at all. Surely these are not inappropriate. These films, along with the rest of the Warner Bros. library, represent some of the funniest animated footage ever filmed. They are to be viewed not as mere children's entertainment but as classic movies, and a television program or other outlet should be created for the adult fans of the cartoons, not necessarily an informational or theme show, but one that shows uncut, fully original prints of the Speedy and other classic cartoons, separate from regular rotation. As proved by the success of the censored but popular "June Bugs" marathon, "Toonami", and the success of the recent "Toon Heads" and "Adult Swim" series, children are not the only audience on your network. We feel that it is a terrible thing to completely ban an entire series of 6-minute cartoon shorts which have endured a long-lasting popularity with all ages for nearly 40 years. We ask that your network re-review the entire series, and return at least those cartoons that are free of negative stereotypes, to television. Thank you,
-Matthew Hunter, fan,
and,
-the undersigned
