Rocky Mount, NC Sunset Skatepark Phase II

Supporters of skateboarding in the city of Rocky Mount, NC and beyond would like to see expansion of Sunset Skatepark located at Sunset public park in Rocky Mount, NC.

In 2004, Rocky Mounts Parks & Recreation department significantly increased public access to Sunset Skatepark: open hours from dawn to dusk, 365 days per year. This has attracted hundreds of athletes and spectators from across the Twin Counties and the east coast, including visits from professional skateboarders Marc Corbett (Wanchese, NC), Jesse Davis (Manteo, NC) and Dave Sciencefair Maxwell (Currituck, NC).

With increased access and use, the design limitations of Sunset Skatepark have become clear to local skateboarders who have surpassed the basic skill level for which the skatepark was originally intended. Skateboarders in Rocky Mount with advanced skills are unable to continue to learn on obstacles meant for beginners. In addition, Sunset Skateparks limited square footage is too small to accommodate its growing population of users. The result: skateboarders who are twenty, thirty, and in some cases forty years old ride the same obstacles as children who are as young as 5 years old, presenting a safety hazard for the children.

In 2005, Rocky Mount's Parks and Recreation department purchased official, engineered plans to construct a separate concrete skateboard bowl to relieve the crowd/safety issue and also provide advanced skateboarders a world-class challenge that will last generations.
