SOAS rightly prides itself on diversity and considers itself to be a 'world acclaimed centre of multi-cultural learning and academic excellence' (SOAS Perspectus 2011) we intend to keep it that way. The Spending Review signals the Coalition government's intention to cut their funding of Higher Education by at least 40\%. This will result in a shift in the funding of education from the state to the individual and industry as universities become much more exposed to the trends of market forces. As governemnt funding is reduced, many of the subjects that SOAS specialises in will be threatened. The likely results will be course streamlining and closures, job losses and an increase in the amount of students have to pay for their education.

Please sign this petition to make the case for SOAS as a unique and specialist institution. We value diversity in our education system and believe that the subjects taught at SOAS should be invested in by the government.

Education should be for all walks of life not just for profit...
