Early intervention for students who lack readiness skills for 1st grade is essential for future success in school. They need an extra year. They dont need another year of kindergarten, but theyre not ready for 1st grade.
New York State allows children to enter kindergarten who are 5 years old by December 1st. Some children with September, October, and November birthdays arent developmentally ready for school. The extra year that pre-first offers gives them the time they need to be ready and develop reading skills for first grade.
The Saranac Lake Central School District has decided to discontinue our Pre-First program. We feel this is detrimental to the early intervention of our children, and would like to see Pre-First reinstated.
