Vassar College, located in Poughkeepsie, New York, has recently completed what they describe as a "deer cull" on their 500 acre ecological preserve known as Vassar Farm. 64 deer were slaughtered by hired sharpshooters. They were inhumanely baited with food before being massacred. Vassar College went ahead with the cull despite strong community opposition. Additionally, it was carried out behind the backs of Vassar students and faculty.
Many of us live in the surrounding area and are familiar with the small deer families that range peacefully among us, well outside the perimeter of the farm. We deplore Vassar College's failure to consult the surrounding community on this issue, as well as their failure to take less drastic steps, if any are necessary. There are humane methods of deer population control. Vassar College has decided to re-evaluate the need for more shootings in the coming months. We demand the permanent cessation of all shooting at Vassar Farm.

deer are not "overpopulated" but underhabitated. we are overpopulated, and have decided sentient wildlife is trumped by our gardens, landscape, autos. vassar needs to rethink its priorities and consider its legacy..
