THREAT TO UNIVERSITY NURSERY
The University of Liverpool is planning to remove the subsidy for staff and students who have children at the University’s on site nursery. The University state a wider cost cutting strategy as it’s main reason for this decision. Currently 40 staff and 18 students have a child in the nursery. The University promotes its ‘family-friendly’ policies and its application for silver Athena Swan status (for supporting women in science and engineering). Removing nursery subsidies for staff and students contradicts these positions. At a time when many of our members are being downgraded and overloaded with work, when we have received below inflation pay awards for the past THREE years, the University should be working to support staff. This adds another level of detriment to a group of staff and students who currently receive a relatively small childcare subsidy which, in context, does not cost the University a huge amount of money. The impact on staff and students however is considerable. The withdrawal of the subsidy, coupled with the annual rise equates to an increase of £200 per month for each child in just one year.
The UCU Branch Committee propose to campaign against the loss of nursery subsidies and initially we would like you to sign the attached petition asking the university to abandon its plans to remove the childcare subsidy.
Please share this petition with your colleagues, they do not have to be union members to support this campaign.
