Rokker Radio, the weekly programme produced by, for, and about the Travelling and Roma community, is
facing possible closure. Rokker Radio plays a vital role keeping Gypsy/Traveller/Roma views alive and on the public agenda, it allows members of the community to stay in touch, debate and be informed.
It also provides a wealth of music, talk and entertainment steeped in a culture reaching back centuries and moving forward rapidly.
Many, many people, both Traveller and non Traveller tune in live to the broadcast and others who live outside the broadcast area (who were hoping the service would ultimately go national)listen to the programme on line.
In addition the programme provides an important link and source of information for professionals and advocates in, and for the Gypsy / Traveller / Roma communities.
Costs to run the programme are comparitively low and considering that it is the only programme either on radio or television serving one of Britain's oldest ethnic minorities the show provides real value for money.
In the interests of the community it serves and the wider community we really cannot allow this small but significant service to be axed.
From local news and events, to the World Service, to reporting from war zones and Children in Need the BBC has a unsurpassable reputation for fairness, truth and just representation - to get rid of Rokker Radio would constitute a great injustice towards a community which has put up with far too much already. Therefore, we wish to express our opposition to any such action.
