Saginaw Public School has cancelled their traditional Hallloween celebrations (costumes, treats, parade) in favour of "black and orange spirit day". The reasons seem to be:
* a desire to focus on curriculum and character development
* food allergies
* inappropriate costumes
* multicultural population
We feel that these issues can easily be handled while still preserving a bit of fun and tradition for our children.
* The curriculum has already been pushed back such that more challenging topics are being addressed in earlier grades. Even large companies know that productivity is better when employee (student) morale is up.
* We can send nut-free snacks, the same as we do for lunches. Student can even take their treats home for parental inspection rather than eat them at school.
* We can continue to follow the "no weapons" rule for costumes and observe dress code.
* Many familes of many nationalities are upset by the cancellation of tradional Halloween festivities. This is Canada and too often, in the spirit of being "all-inclusive", we Canadians are losing our identity. What would happen if we went into a school in a different country and told them that their customs made us uncomfortable? Do you think they would change things in the whole school?
Halloween can be such a bonding experience between students and teachers. It is a bit of fun in a world that is gettng increasingly stressful for kids. They're only young once - don't get rid of customs that have been happening for decades....customs that we adults fondly remember...customs that our kids look forward to every year. We, the undersigned, request that the students of Saginaw Public School be allowed to dress up in their costumes and enjoy their day. Let our kids be kids and keep their beloved Halloween!!
