Save Student SEED

Student SEED is a seminar course whose purpose is to empower participants to examine important issues surrounding social justice as they relate to their personal lives and the university setting. It is our understanding that the University of Wisconsin Madison regularly touts Student SEED as falling under the rubric of Plan 2008, yet has only minimally supported the Student SEED project through a meager level of funding from the Equity and Diversity Resource Center (EDRC) for the past 5 years. Also, we understand that the facilitators, who take several hours of their personal time to work on Student SEED each week, do not receive any compensation for the work that goes above and beyond their current full-time campus staff positions or schoolwork. If the University truly values the benefits that Student SEED offers to UW-Madison students like us, then the University must support it in a way that puts it on par with other similar courses on campus.

Therefore, we strongly support and encourage the University of Wisconsin Madison to institutionalize Student SEED by doing the following:

Provide regular and fair levels of compensation for the facilitators of the Student SEED project
Make Student SEED a listed course within the College of L&S
Make Student SEED a course that fulfills the Ethnic Studies requirement
Allow facilitators to continue working with a similar level of autonomy that the EDRC currently affords them
