Due to a complete lack of investment by the Department of Education and now with major cuts in staffing planned the future of Tallaght Sports Complex at Balrothery is under very real threat. The Department of Education has only one other complex of this kind in the Country and has expressly said it does not see this as part of its brief. Therefore they have not invested in the complex in over 20 years. South Dublin County Council has the swimming pool in its swimming pool plan for the County and does grant aid the Complex. It recognises that this it is a vital piece of infrastructure for the local schools, clubs and local communities. Recent estimates for the level of investment needed to return the complex to good condition range between €0.5m and €1.0m. This is a small price to pay compared with the €17m thatwas been spoken about prior to the 2007 general election to re-build the whole complex. The petition is aimed at the Councillors and TDs including the two Government Ministers elected from this area. Between them and our very supportive Public they should be able to save the sports complex and put a package together, including grants from the Department of Education, the Department of Sport and South Dublin County Council. The three demands on the petition are: • No to cuts in staff or service. • For €1m in investment. • For the Council to take over the complex from the Department of Education.
