SAVE OUR COMMUNITY PARK AND SAY NO TO DESTROYING THE COLLIERY DAM.
We, the undersigned, wish to stop the demolition of the Colliery Dams, a signicificant part of the Harewood community.
Our elected officials tell us the Dam would cost an estimated 30 million to fix and there is a fear that during an Earthquake it would collapse. During the public meeting of November 21, 2012 it was revealed by local engineers and local biologists that
- Larger dams have been re built for a cost of less then 10 million (Meaning the city is most likely inflating the repair figures)
- The city has not taken into consideration the eco system at the Colliery dam, as pointed out by local biologists. (Remember the owls and eagles feed off the fish in the lakes they want to drain)
- The property value will probably go down without any major parks within walking distance. ( The colliery dam is a big selling point to realtors selling in the area.)
- The dam survived the large earthquake that hit the island in the 40's and was updated in the 70's. A retired watershed engineer technologist, said her calculations tell her the risk of dam failure is minimal. She said an earthquake strong enough to damage the dams is a one-in-2,475 year event, and that the dams have a 1.6-per cent chance of failing over the next 50 years. She added that resonance of the dams, not the size of an earthquake or distance from the epicentre, is more likely to determine its ability to remain intact during a seismic event.
- The dam is used by the highschools and universities for education, search and rescue and first aid is also conducted at the Colliery Dam.
- The dam is an important part of Harewood because we, the residence, simply love it. Its the perfect place to go swimming in the summer time and we have enjoyed and loved it for generations. It's a part of who we are as a community. It's a symbol of everything that makes living in Harewood beautiful.
We demand you look for alternatives to tearing down the dams. (We do not want explosives anywhere near our residential areas!), If you are looking for re-election we will not give it to you if you take away our dams!
