Save the lollipop lady at Leopold Primary School and keep our children safe

Brent Council want to make our lollipop lady redundant at the end of this term to save money. We feel that the traffic volume at drop off and pick up time is dangerous and without a doubt, needs policing by Geraldine, our lollipop lady. The lollipop lady salary is £6000 a year – a small price to pay to ensure the safety of more than 400 children each day.

We have until Tuesday 24th June to sign this petition so that we can include your signatures in the submission to council that is required next week.

Here are some more reasons why our lollipop lady should be saved:

At school drop off and pick up time the area is extremely busy and congested.
Children rushing to and from school, chatting to friends, running to catch up with their siblings and car traffic and the dangers it brings can sometimes be the last thing on their minds.
Added to this, one way streets like Hawkshead Road encourage motorists to drive faster and with less care because they don’t have oncoming traffic to consider.
It is difficult to see children coming when approaching the junction as there are parked cars on both sides - nursery, reception and Year 1 and 2 children are too short to be seen above parked cars.
Some of the children are very young – nursery children and their younger siblings – and they may run into the road.
Some of the children are coming to and leaving school are unaccompanied and need supervision crossing the road.
There are no crossing patrols at secondary schools and accident statistics show that serious accidents shoot up at the very time that children make the transition from primary to secondary school. The connection seems obvious – when there isn’t a school patrol and the children are not mature enough to handle the traffic on their own, accidents are more likely to happen.
