Save United States of Tara

United States of Tara is one of the most clever and heartbreaking shows to ever air on television. Created by Diablo Cody and produced by Steven Spielberg, the show focuses on a woman living with DID (dissociative identity disorder - commonly known as multiple personality disorder) and it tells the story of how she and her family live and cope with her unique condition. The series earned its star Toni Collette an Emmy and a Golden Globe award for best actress in 2010. It has a strong following in the LGBT community for its realistic portrayal of LGBT characters. The supporting cast and the writing staff have also been praised for their brilliant work in making this show come together.

On May 23rd, 2011, Showtime announced that it was canceling the critically acclaimed show. No official reason was given but it's been speculated that the series was axed due to poor ratings. This would make sense if United States of Tara was on network television where viewership is needed so that advertisements can help pay for the cost to make the show, but United States Tara is on Showtime - a premium cable channel where viewers pay a monthly fee to view the program. This fee helps fund the cost of their programming and many fans like myself subscribe to Showtime just to see United States of Tara.

This petition has been created to urge Showtime to keep United States of Tara for at least one more season and to give customers what they're paying for. Although Showtime has a strong lineup of wonderful, quality programming, nothing on their schedule comes close to being as sharp, edgy, witty, or sincere as United States of Tara. This is a show that has touched the lives and hearts of millions. Every day people struggle with rare disorders and conditions that there is no cure for and/or very little information about. United States of Tara has given these people someone they can relate to - a hero who is troubled and flawed yet brave and courageous enough to never give up hope.

And just as Tara never gives up, United States of Tara fans aren't giving up either. Showtime, please don't take her away from us and please bring our beloved show back next season.
