School Board Assumes Authority

The Fairfax County School Board in Virginia has assumed complete and ultimate authority to make decisions and take actions without first gaining input or authorization from the very citizens they are accountable too. An 11th hour amendment by the School Board in January of 2005, has resulted in students being added to West Springfield High School and an ensuing boundary study of our community without any input from the citizens. More complete information is available at www.westspringfieldcoalition.com
After months of forums, civic association gatherings, PTA meetings, letter writing campaigns, and media coverage providing hard facts against a proposed boundary study for our community, the Board still will not reconsider their stand.
Our County has endured many hasty and ill-fated decisions from this School Board. This Board has shown its willingness to go against its own policies and make decisions based on its own judgement. This has become a powerful tool, more important than input from the communities it serves. We will not have our students educational interests second to political pandering and the appearance of impropriety.
As citizens of this County, we call for:
1. Halting the boundary study of West Springfield High School, Lee High School and Lake Braddock Secondary School NOW! It is unnecessary, irresponsible and politically motivated.
2.The School Board to respect the authority of the citizens to be involved with decisions regarding the educational interests of their children, as granted by the voters of Fairfax County.
