Since March 15, 2011, the Assad regime has embarked on a policy of killing peaceful demonstrators seeking reforms. As the oppression and violence intensified, Syrians on the street have turned to regime change. This petition has but one purpose: To respond to the wishes of millions of Syrians who seek freedom, democracy, and human rights in an era when it is not a privilege to be free.
If Assad survives this episode, he will not be weaker as some policy makers in the west believe, but more lethal. He will intensify his oppression against peaceful Syrians; he will spark new campaigns of terror against his enemies; in other words, more terror and more violence. The world community has one choice today: To help bring more peace to the region. We can succeed by pressuring the politicians in the US and the EU to levy real sanctions and to turn Assad to the ICC for prosecution for crimes against Humanity. Syrians will then be able to depose him on their own.
