Stop Florida Schools, including Flagler County, From Grading items such as Progress Reports, Signed Documents and Supplies.

Several of Florida's School Districts,including Flagler County, being one of them. Are allowing their teachers to give a grade for such items as progress reports, permission slips and other forms that may require a parents signature. I feel this is a form of discipline, not teaching. Any signed document that requires a signature from a parent is nothing but a notification. It is not part of the academic and shouldnt be graded as such. How this could affect your child? This can affect a child overall GPA in the high school years 9th thru 12th. This could affect sport eligibility, the college your child plans to attend as well as any scholarship programs. Your childs GPA is supposed to base only on your academic achievements in that course, not their behavior. This is not the only method they have been using to discipline our children. I have heard from several students, that if they need more than one bathroom pass or a locker pass a semester (9 weeks), they are told they will be deducted points from their grades. Also, grading a school supply, making certain items mandatory, which is not aloud, it is discrimination. Once again, their GPA's will be affected by nothing that has to do with the academic.

How does this affect a child's grade and overall GPA? On a 4.0 GPA weighed scale, it could actually drop the Child's GPA down one letter grade or more. For example: Last year my child received a C in Dance. I received a phone call from her coach saying she was ineligible for cheerleading. I requested to review one teachers records. The teacher had given her 6 Fs in the 40\% curriculum area of her report card for signed documents. This teacher also stated that she sent me an email every time a progress report went out. I only received 2. Those I signed and returned. Her grade went from an A to a C. I also noticed that on that progress report of February 1st that she had already put grades in for March. Future Grading? Then on the final report I noticed the grades changed. I have been to the school with this issue as well as the superintendent. They are doing absolutely nothing about it. I have not been able to access or review my childs records ever since. I have contacted the Florida Board of Education and as of today have not heard a word.

Why? Because they do not want to have to go back and correct every childs file that this happen too. This has and will effecting in one way or another, 12,808 students in Flagler County alone, not to mention the ones that graduated already. I could only imagine the increase in numbers across Florida. I have also brought this attention to the governors office. They are closely watching to see what the out come will be.

This year we have noticed that several of the teachers are still given grading progress reports, signed documents and supplies. It is up to us parents and students to say not this is not acceptable and it needs to stop. Who are they actually trying to discipline? Please ask your child if this is happening in their school.
