Research is now suggesting that Trawling for cod in British waters in early autumn at a time when the herring spawn is leading to large discards of dead undersize codlings

As killing juvenile cod before they ever get chance to spawn will be having a detrimental effect on the cod recovery plan we would like to request that Defra examine the practice of fishing for cod amongst herring spawn with a view to addressing the problem of undersize discards which are said at times to outnumber the actual number of size codling taken from the same fishery.
