1. WHEREAS the International Afar Conference was held in the City of Ottawa, Canada on 3 August 2006;
2. WHEREAS delegates to the Conference convened in order to discuss the historic and the current challenges and difficulties facing the Afar tribal people in East Africa;
3. WHEREAS it was agreed at the said International Afar Conference that each participant and each delegate would do everything possible to draw attention to the injustices being visited upon the Afar people in East Africa.
NOW THEREFORE, THE PARTICIPANTS AND THE DELEGATES OF THE INTERNATIONAL AFAR CONFERENCE HELD AT THE CITY OF OTTAWA ON 3 AUGUST 2006 BY THEIR SIGNATURES HEREBY:
1. CONDEMN the treatment of the Afar people by the Eritrean Regime;
2. CALL upon the international community, including governments and non-government organizations, to immediately intervene to stop the atrocities currently being committed by the Eritrean Regime which are having the unwarranted effect of causing the Afar people to flee their tribal and ancestral homelands, thereby further impoverishing them and placing them at severe risk; and
3. CALL upon the international community, including non-government organizations, to immediately respond to the Afar human suffering and to provide aid, shelter, food, and relief to those in need.
