Central Alabama is one of the worst areas affected by this phenomenon. On December 16, 2000 a tornado hit Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The only station to carry live coverage was ABC 33/40. The weatherman for that station received an Edward R. Murrow Award. Since this was the only station to carry live coverage, and was rewarded for this coverage, other local news stations have tried to duplicate this success. How do you do it? You interrupt and sometimes forgo the primetime schedule. The reports become very mundane and repeat the same information over and over. You do not want to stay off the air in case something happens.
A local anchorman was recently asked why they do this here in Birmingham. He responded that because of the competitiveness of local news, and the 2000 situation, news directors are hesitant to go off the air and just break in when something does happen.
We as viewers are informing you, news directors, that this needs to stop!
