We the undersigned encourage the UVA administration to create a better, more transparent and more accountable commencement speaker committee to better reflect and respect the diverse opinions of the student body.
While we do not attack Judge Harvie Wilkinson on his personal traits, we do not believe that his opinions and actions are in accordance with the values that we wish for the University of Virginia to uphold. We wish for our Commencement Ceremony to signify our unity as a class, our intellectual commitment and our dedication to diverse opinions not as a moment of division.
We sign this letter, not because Judge Wilkinson himself, but rather, the way in which he was selected. We wish not only for a unifying speaker, but a process that is fair, open and respectful.
