The Composition and Selection of the Board of Trustees of South Carolina State University

The selection and composition of SCSUs Board is governed by South Carolina state statute which we believe should be amended to provide structured involvement of alumni in good standing with the National Alumni Association. This is the case with several of the other state supported institutions, and we believe is a significant reason these institutions enjoy widespread alumni financial support through the establishment of endowments, scholarships, and fellowships, as well as individual contributions.
We have been made painfully aware by many of our graduates that this lack of input in the governance of SCSU and other critical decisions of the institution are the main reasons the school has been unable to develop sustained alumni support.
We believe that a significant first step toward increasing alumni support and restoring confidence in the university would be, to amend state statute to allow alumni participation in the selection of trustees.
We therefore ask that the law be amended to allow the 6 At-Large trustees to be selected or determined by the South Carolina State University National Alumni Association as is the case with several other state institutions. We also petition for the removal of any in-state residency requirement so that alumni and friends who are willing to share their resources and influence with and on behalf of SCSU may be eligible to serve.
