The Rio Theatre, located on the corner of Broadway and Commercial Drive in East Vancouver has been showing movies for 74 years. It will show it's last film on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012. This is not due to any type of financial or economic problems, or that the building will be torn down to make way for condominiums - it was because Corine Lea acquired a liquor license for the venue in hopes to sell alcohol at live events. After completing the initial process to acquire such a license, it would appear that Lea was misinformed about the repercussions - despite having live shows on separate nights, no movie theatre in British Columbia is allowed to serve alcohol. This would mean that the Rio would no longer be able show any kind of movie, whether it be a Hollywood film or a film created by local filmmakers. To read more, visit the link below

Although selling alcohol in a movie theatre is common place in other parts of the world (and this country) the goal of this petition is a way to spread the word that selling alcohol at a live event and showing films without the purchase of liquor should be two separate things in one venue - and hopefully local MP Libby Davies will hear our plea (I would encourage you to write to your MPs as well). As someone who lives in the East Van community, I would be absolutely devastated to know that a well known landmark and staple of the neighborhood (and to the city of Vancouver) would be deprived of doing what it does best because of some archaic law. Please take a minute to sign this petition, and pass it along.
