To voice objection to the proposed cut of PAN for CVCC

Devon County Council (DCC) are proposing to cut planned admissions numbers (PAN) for Clyst Vale Community College (CVCC) from the 180 which is regarded as ideal, and accordingly downgrade funding. Such cuts and downgrading would cause considerable damage to the school. Parents, governors, current and former students and friends of the school are vehemently opposed to them. CVCC is an extremely popular school, and any number of former and current pupils speak highly of the amount they enjoyed \ are enjoying their time there. DCC claim that just 120 places per year are required to sate local demand (though this has now been upped to 150). Yet the school has always taken pupils, many of them, from far outside its catchment area, due to the fact that parents from Exeter rightly regard it highly and are very keen to send their children there.

The most immediate effect of the proposed PAN cuts and funding downgrading would be the loss of the sixth-form (post-16) part of the school. Such a loss would be particularly hard felt - CVCC is the only school within reach of Exeter which offers a sixth-form, and the sixth-form is one of the most vital components of what makes the school a success. The cuts would also mean staff redundancies and larger class sizes.

The principal reason DCC gives for the cuts and downgrading of funding is that pupil numbers need to be balanced across Exeter and the surrounding area. Many Exeter schools have recently been rebuilt with help from private funding. In spite of this, CVCC remains equally if not more popular with parents and children, due to the calibre of teaching and the excellent atmosphere at the school, and newly rebuilt city schools are under-subscribed. CVCC is essentially being punished for its own success, success which those involved with it have worked exceptionally hard for many years to build, with none of the instant investment recently enjoyed by many of its rivals.

We wish to voice our objection to DCC's proposed changes to the school and emphasise that there are a great many people who believe the school's PAN should remain at 180.
