UNC Charlotte Needs a Dedicated Recreation Center

Recreational Services provides college students with unique opportunities to create a sense of community, reach fitness goals, participate in intramural sports and sport clubs, and work on-campus jobs. UNC Charlotte currently has inadequate space for Recreational Services to meet the needs of over 25, 000 students. Belk Gym is shared between the Kinesiology Department and Recreational Services. The students recreational needs fall second to that of the Kinesiology Program. The SAC is shared between Recreational Services, Athletics, and Recreational Facilities Management. Students are frequently forced out of the group fitness studio, fitness center, practice courts, and locker rooms so that the building can service other needs and special events. In addition, the lack of space often causes students to pay for gym memberships elsewhere or to neglect exercise altogether. Most significantly, the lack of space is crippling the positive impact that Recreational Services could have on the UNC Charlotte Community.
UNCC needs a Dedicated Recreation Center to meet the needs of its students!
A Dedicated Recreation Center would be a facility open year round to service the recreational needs of the student body. Key components of the facility would be large cardio machine and weight training spaces, an indoor track, locker rooms, basketball courts, racquetball courts, an NCAA swimming pool with lap swim and unstructured recreational aquatics space, cycling studio, combative arts studio, group fitness rooms, equipment checkout facilities, and more.
Are you tired of waiting for a cardio machine, and stepping over people to get to free weights during peak gym times? Do you wish you had access to a locker room even during basketball games? Wish there was more space for intramural sports? Want more time in the gym for your sport club? Want to swim laps with friends at more convenient hours? Would you like to see UNC Charlotte build a better sense of community among students? If so, then sign this petition saying you want UNC Charlotte to have a Dedicated Recreation Center and support the addition of a $5.00 fee increase to begin the planning process!
