The York Region Amateur Radio Club, approximately 100 local York Region constituents, requests your attendance at the Ham Radio FieldDay Emergency Simulation on the June 23/24 weekend.
Local ham radio operators will demonstrate modern capabilities at the annual emergency simulation called FieldDay and will be showing off their emergency capabilities. Over the last little while, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications in emergencies worldwide. When trouble is brewing, ham radio people are often the first to volunteer and provide critical information and communications, to your constituents and infrastructure in general. Club members serve at many community events; parades, street fairs, cycle races, and even performance car rallies that encourage local and regional tourism. During the both the Millennium communication interruptions in 1999-2000 and the black-out in 2003, Amateur Radio operators, called Hams - were often the ONLY way the regional fire, police and EMS could communicate, and dozens of volunteers acted in the best interest of our community.
On the FieldDay/07 weekend, you will have a chance to meet and talk with ham radio operators, affectionately know as hams, and see for yourself what Amature Radio is about. Showing off the newest digital capabilities, voice communications and even historical Morse code, ham clubs from across the North America will be holding public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities, including York Region Amateur Radio Clubs (YRARC) display at the Sutton Fair Grounds, Sutton West, Ontario.
This annual event, called "FieldDay", co-sponsored by the Radio Amatures of Canada RAC and American Radio Relay League ARRL, will take place from 2 p.m., local time, June 23rd, around the clock until 2pm June 24th, for a full 24 hours straight. The clubs entry into the contest will only use emergency power supplies such as generators and bicycle pedal power to power the full radio stations dispersed over the fair grounds. Their slogan, When all else fails, Amateur Radio Works!" is more than just words to the hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis.
The York Region Amature Radio Club will be demonstrating Amateur Radio at the Sutton Fair Grounds in Sutton West over the June 23rd 24th weekend. The public is invited to come see ham radios capabilities, and learn how to get their own radio license before the next disaster strikes. Students, local media and emergency response agencies have attended and are invited again this year. "We hope that people will come and see for themselves, this is not your Grandfather's radio anymore," said Allen Pitts of the ARRL. "The communications networks that ham radio people can quickly create, have saved many lives over the years when other systems have failed or were overloaded.
There are more than 2.5 million Hams around the world including approximately 100 local York Region ones, and others aboard the ISS. Through RAC, ham volunteers provide emergency communications for various emergency response agencies, Red Cross, and other local agencies, for free. See what modern Amateur Radio can do for you so as members of the government, we request your attendance at the Ham Radio FieldDay Emergency Simulation on the June 23/24 weekend. .
