Last year, in response to a number of artist forums held by the then NSW Minister for The Arts Virginia Judge, extra funding was approved for Quick Response Arts Grants.
The current NSW Minister for The Arts George Souris is proposing to cut these grants by 50% to just two rounds a year and abolish the Independent Theatre grants altogether.
Quick Response grants were designed for groups and individuals who had an unexpected invitation to participate in a recognised national or international arts and cultural event / activity. It is these types of grants that put NSW on the map.
Such a decision would adversely affect the accessibility of grants to the small-to-medium sector in both regional and urban areas. Many are community based arts groups and these grants are vital to the development and health of our local arts industries in theatre, dance, galleries, museums and music.
We urge the Minister to rethink this decision and strengthen support for the small-to-medium sector, not dismantle it.
Please sign the petition at and we will deliver it to the Minister, the Premier and Arts NSW.
