Big Issue: One Man and His Dog

Hi all, Darren is the licenced Big Issue vendor who you may have seen some mornings and evenings (for the past goodness knows how long), positioned on the corner of St Martin’s Lane, London. If you are local yet still can’t place Darren, you may recall that he had a friendly white Bull Terrier that would often settle at his feet and lie on a tartan blanket. I’d often see the dog interacting with children and adults - but only ever in a calm and friendly manner. Moreover, she is incredibly tame and has been well trained by Darren; having been raised in an environment with young children. Whether you have ever purchased The Big Issue from Darren or not, I stand testament to the fact that Darren is a polite guy who is simply trying to earn a living. More importantly, the presence of his dog meant for Darren that more people would stop, engage with him and be more likely to buy a copy of The Big Issue. As I understand some members of staff at a well -known coffee chain had recently complained to The Big Issue that Darren’s dog had been aggressive/antagonistic, but to whom exactly no-one is sure. Nothing has been explained to Darren except that a complaint had been made and as a result he would no longer be able to have his dog with him on the St Martin's Lane patch. Darren insists that at no point has his dog ever been aggressive towards any member of the public, which is a belief that would appear to reinforce general consensus. As all pet owners and compassionate people will appreciate, Darren is incredibly upset with the whole situation but is not in a position to challenge ‘the man’ or the decision. I also understand that some of you may disagree with any attempt to reverse this decision, as there’s usually ‘no smoke without fire’. Regrettably, based on no evidence at all I’m inclined to believe it’s simply a case of ‘artistic difference’. Having spoken to Darren just earlier today, he had sold 7 copies of the Big Issue whereas a few weeks ago he’d have sold 20 up until that point of the day. Darren is unaware of this petition, but if you feel like you can help a voice that is seldom heard to become a voice that could be heard – please do, it will be the best Christmas present you give this year. Thank you for your time.
