Because he has violated the trust of the African community again and again with programming of the lowest quality; Because he continues to exploit African-American people and particularly Black women with standarless programming; Because he has breeched even the minimal standards of decency and fair play in the cowardly dismissal of Tavis Smiley, host of "BET Tonight" at the behest of Viacom, Inc.; Because he and his executives sought to undermine BET's own public affairs programming by continually shifting "BET Tonight's time slot and run-time, effectively ensuring low ratings which could then be used as the impetus to dismiss Mr. Smiley; Because we believe that his continued presence, given his adherence to cheaply produced, poor quality programming and his shoddy oversight of BET thus far, is the main impediment to improving the tenor and content of the channel; Because we believe that his continued presence is destructive to the future of Black America's only targeted cable presence; And because we believe that only with new leadership can BET gain a fresh perspective, grow beyond its current format and regain the loyalty of its viewers by truly meeting their needs; ...we hereby call upon Viacom, Inc., and its CEO Mel Karmazin to exercise their discretion, and demand the resignation of Robert Johnson, president of Black Entertainment Television effective immediately.
