We, the undersigned students of Valparaiso University, with all respect to the University's rules and regulations, would like to call into question the effectiveness of a few of these policies. In particular, the unfair targeting of students who choose to responsibly walk home after drinking instead of taking the risk of driving back. This method of enforcement is counterproductive, and in essence has encouraged intoxicated students to drive home rather than risk being picked off the street walking. We believe that students who choose to consume alcohol in a safe and responsible manner should be treated in a fair way that reflects their safe decisions. Secondly, the University should move past its overblown fear of litigation and adopt a strategy more similar to that of other universities where strong ticket policies exist. Since the intention of drinking laws and the regulation of alcohol is to protect people's well-being, we believe that those who act in a responsible manner should be treated accordingly. We demand open-minded discussion of this topic at the highest levels of the University administration and throughout the student body in the pursuit of the establishment of a fair ticketing system for those consuming in a reasonable manner. We hope that the University will adopt a policy which greater treats its students with the same dignity and respect that the vast majority of the students hold toward the University.
