Words cannot describe this weeks tragic slaying of Linda Trinh. Even if this heinous crime were committed by an acquaintance of the victim, it does not negate the reality of insufficient security and housing. When Christopher Elser was murdered, the administration said all the right things as they are doing now. They told us security and safety would be increased, and in the immediate aftermath it was. Yet once tears were shed, the dust had settled, and the cameras went elsewhere, little if any permanent change occurred except the customary lip service. Will we let the same thing happen again? As the saying goes, Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Safety may be the straw that broke the camels back, but it is just the tip of the iceberg. For too long students have suffered on this campus on all fronts: security, housing, lack of community, lack of social events, grading policy The laundry list goes on and on.
The administration scrutinizes us. It is time someone started watching them. We as students have an obligation to stand up for ourselves. We have a voice. Show them we care. It is our school, too, and it is time we started showing it. Solutions are available. Come to a walk-in protest in front of President Brodys house at 10 A.M. this Monday, 1/31/2005 for a one day student strike. Even if you cannot attend the protest, please sign this petition to show your support for real changes on our campus. We must show the administration that we are organized and that we want positive changes NOW!
