- Uncertainty for the archaeological Library, Archive and Publications of ex-IPA, presently IGESPAR, IP

The below signed are protesting the uncertain future of the largest specialized library of archaeological heritage in Portugal, that has served students, university professors and researcher as well as the general public.
We refer to the Archaeological Library of IGESPAR, IP, (Instituto de Gestão do Património Arquitectónico e Arqueológico, IP) which resulted from the 1999 cession of the German States collections to the transference of materials to the Portuguese State, due to the extinction of the German Archaeological Institutes closure of its Lisbon branch. At that time, the collection became absorbed and integrated in to the Instituto Português de Arqueologia (Portuguese Institute of Archaeology).
Of no less importance is the permanent and necessary upkeep of the quantity of publications in this library that is basically guaranteed by the mutual exchange of publications, with hundreds of similar national and international institutions of archaeology, with its own edition of the "Revista Portuguesa de Arqueologia" and the monographic series "Trabalhos de Arqueologia". Such publications have played a essential role in the dispersion and dissemination of national archaeological activity over the last decade.
Adding to this preoccupation concerning the archives of the institution formerly known as IPA are the archaeological reports a volume of works that are of great historical value to the collection. Here, one can consult those reports and the archaeological campaigns conducted in Portugal since the Estado Novo until the present day - many of which have never been published and are of extreme and essential importance to any researcher.
The Resolution of the Ministry Cabinet n.º 78/2008, (D.R. n.º 94, Série I de 15-05) which refers to the 78/2008 improvement and reconstruction of the river front of the city of Lisbon, foresees that in this area where the Library of Archaeology and the above mentioned archives are currently located, construction of the new National Museum of Coaches will have to be initiated, during this year, in order for the work to conclude in time for the commemoration ceremonies for the first centennial since the implantation of the Republic in 2010.
We would like, therefore, to alert his Excellency to the importance of the continuity of this library as well as those archaeological publications and associated works, whose quality has come to be recognized beyond the borders of Portugal.
