The "OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network" will make the current Discovery Health Channel defunct. The OWN network will be available in more than 70 million homes because of the present position of Discovery Health Channel. The OWN network is stated to be a "new multi-platform media venture which will be designed to entertain, inform and inspire people to live their best lives." Indeed, it seems that Discovery Communications for Discovery Health is moving away from educating the public on how to avoid hazardous situations towards the human body and is now aiming towards entertainment, such as talk shows and inspiring people to live their lives.
Current shows shown on Discovery Health such as: Untold Stories of the E.R., Trauma: Life In The E.R., Code Blue, Dr. G: Medical Examiner, The Critical Hour, and MANY others may not have a sister station to be aired on. Some may move to The Science Channel, but we all know that The Science Channel will not air all of these very informative shows from the previous Discovery Health. The Science Channel already has current shows to worry about airing such as: Survivorman, How It's Made, and Beyond Tomorrow.
If you have not heard about the Discovery Health channel, I encourage you to at least take a look at a few of the shows. You will be surprised how much information you will learn from just one show on that network. Ranging from serious medical emergencies to learning how autopsies are performed will show anyone watching it how fragile the human body can be and how to improve it. This network not only educates the public on how to improve your body, but also shows surprising medical mysteries.
As we know, The Oprah Winfrey Show will be going off the air in about a year. However, Oprah has many magazines, books, and films available to the public. She even owns part of the Oxygen Network which is similar to Lifetime. Taking over one of Discovery's most influential network is ridiculous. Discovery Communications may claim that the viewing for Discovery Health has been down by 20\% and the take over is only for the better. It is not the viewers' fault that Discovery Communications has not advertised the Discovery Health Channel as often as they have done for TLC and Animal Planet. In fact, the way I stumbled upon the Discovery Health Channel happened when I was bored and searching through the many of cable channels and nothing was on. Once I hit the Discovery Channel, I immediately became hooked. There is no other network on television that shows the various aspects of health, wellness, and unwellness that the Discovery Channel shows. It is very unlikely that a new network will ever match up to Discovery Health. This network is far to superior to have the OWN Network to just take over.
