Driver's Training Program

We, the undersigned, are requesting that the Granite City School Board reconsider a recent decision concerning the Drivers Training Program offered at the High School. It is our understanding that a proposal to bring the program back to what it once was has been denied. We are requesting this decision be reconsidered and that the old drivers training program be reinstated.
It is our understanding that there are over 900 students waiting to get into the Behind The Wheel portion of the program. We understand that the school is reimbursed by the State of Illinois $25 for the classroom portion and $125 for the behind the wheel classes for each student. This equates to approximately $112,500.00 for the students currently on the waiting list, seemingly sufficient funds to support an expanded program.
We understand that last school year approximately 400 students were forced to seek other means of obtaining their license, requiring parents to pay over $350 for this non-state supplemented training, undoubtedly creating hardship on lower/middle income families. Additionally, limiting the training, impacts disportionately upon students in accelerated classes and sports since they have less options for their scheduling due to academic and athletic constraints. Outside of the financial aspect, it is felt the program offered at the school is more comprehensive then many of the programs offered in the community, putting not only our young drivers at risk, but the community at large. The School Boards decision to limit this drivers training amounts to a disservice to our community and our students. Please reconsider your decision and bring the drivers program back to full capacity.
